JaSeSoi ry gathers together music educators from all teaching levels. One of JaSeSoi ry’s cornerstones is to apply Orff philosophy and Carl Orff’s pedagogical ideas to Finnish music education. INSTRUMENTARIUM

The Board of JaSeSoi controls the use of the instrumentarium. On the year 2008 the JaSeSoi Orff-instrumentarium will be completed.

LOCAL CHAPTERS
Local chapters are volunteer groups of their geographical area. Some chapters are legally registered, some work unorganised. The unifying thing is to share ideas and experiences with other music educators.

FINANCING
All JaSeSoi ry activities are based on voluntary work. No office is available and the work is done in home offices. JaSeSoi ry’s annual membership fee is relatively low, only 30 Euros a year. Financing the activities is kind of “acrobat” work, as the financial support has been received only occasionally. Funding the activities by ourselves has set limits to the level and amount of affordable projects.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Rhythm Seminar
is an annual weekend course in March that has long traditions. The tradition began in 1986 when MUSISOI ry introduced this kind of teaching format in Finland. In the year 2006 JaSeSoi ry celebrated its 20th Rhythm Seminar in Mikkeli.
The faculty 2007 consisted of Polo Vallejo (Spain), Arnold Chiwalala (Tanzania/Finland) and Elina Kivelä-Taskinen (Finland).

Level Course
was introduced to Finnish music education system in the year 1995. The system resembles the American one, but is totally applied to the Finnish society. The three-level course means one-week intensive summer course each year. In addition after finishing the three levels there is an extension called “Diploma Seminar”. Between the levels the participants have homework to do for the next level during the following summer. The evaluation of the Level Courses is not based on “numerus clausus”, only “Passed” or not. During the process the participants have created a portfolio about themselves as music educators. Their portfolios are archived in the Orff Handbook Library.
Although the Level Courses have been run since 1995 it was in 2003, when the first approved printed curriculum was published. This basic work was run by the team headed by Mr. Harri Setälä. His team consisted of Ms. Maaria Salmi-Setälä, Ms. Inkeri Simola-Isaksson, Mr.Esa Lamponen, Mr. Markku Kaikkonen as well as Ms. Soili Perkiö and Mr. Reinhold Wirsching as advisors . The project was funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Level Courses have brought leading instructors from abroad and Finland to enrich the contents of the Finnish Orff education. According to us it is essential to learn what is happening elsewhere, but also to learn to apply the ideas to one’s own work.

Level Courses 2007 took place in Orivesi. The faculty 2007 consisted of Inkeri Simola-Isaksson, Ilkka Salovaara, Harri Setälä, Soili Perkiö, Terhi Oksanen and Markku Kaikkonen, Special guest was Paavo Kiiski.

International World Village
is the newest format in JaSeSoi ry’s educational palette.

The idea of the World Village is to unite music educators of different countries and cultures. The course location is in the middle of the Finnish countryside. Music and human spirit are elements of this efficient week. To quote one of the participants: ”The friendship of all the participants, the support, encouragement, sharing and caring has been exhilarating. The identity of purpose, values and beliefs in the ethos of music education was a strong common bond. The unique personalities, all from different backgrounds, experiences, countries, political and religious values, age and areas of responsibility within music education, all bonded within the umbrella of one huge loving family. The organisation of the whole event was second to none. The common spirit of fun, laughter, mischief, understanding, hard work and ambition prevailed. The spirit of music lives on!”

PUBLICATIONS AND NEWSLETTERS
During the last 13 years JaSeSoi ry has noticed the need of printed information of Orff-Schulwerk and other essentials in Finnish language.
In the year 2002 we revitalized the concept “JaSeSoi Journal”. In the years 1995-1997 the JaSeSoi Journal was a 80 pages’ yearbook, but now we have printed a newsletter Pikku-Journal (Journalette) four times a year. It is free for our members. This is a good media for course information and local events, but we still aim to publish a larger informative Journal once a year.

The number of newsletters will be 2, and two will be catalogued publications (JaSeSoi Journals) with ISSN/ISBN.
We have Journals 1995-97, “Orff-Schulwerk Articles” in Finnish, Documentary of the Orff-Schulwerk Symposium in Finland and Journalette’s available for those who want to get information of Orff-Schulwerk in Finland.
We have even two videos, one from the Symposium 2000 and the other for the World Village 2002 (Africa and Arctic Spirit, with Yamar Thiam).

ORFF EDUCATION CENTER, KOTKA
As the Orff-Schulwerk movement has lived vividly quite a long time in Finland there was a need to archive and document the activities. A couple of years ago the Finnish Orff Education Center was founded in Kotka, Finland. The center had premises and the Orff Handbook Library was kept there available for researchers.
In the year 2003 an EU based project began and the Center is going to have better premises and part time workers. The project is administrated by partners: the City of Kotka, Kotka Adult Education Academy, ymenlaakso Summer University and JaSeSoi ry. The representative of JaSeSoi ry is Mr. Harri Sandborg, who reports the JaSeSoi Board of the activities.

HANDBOOK LIBRARY
JaSeSoi ry controls and administrates a pretty large collection of music educational and Orff-Schulwerk related material. So far the number of the volumes is round 400.
The collection contains the original volumes and international editions of Musik für Kinder as well as documentaries, magazines and journals. The initiator for this collection was Mr. Jukka Siukonen, who began to collect Orff-related material already in 1980’s. Some of the volumes belong to MUSISOI ry, some of them are JaSeSoi ry’s property, but most of the books are given to the collection by individual persons. The main idea is to keep the collection as a whole, and not to donate it to any official organization. The reason for that is that administrators of the organizations change, and we are unable to predict the decisions of the future.
The new premises with computers and other facilities in Kotka make it possible to keep the whole collection available for the researchers.

In 2006 the library took place in Sibelius Academy, Helsinki.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
JaSeSoi ry has always been an international organization with senses open to international exchange. Each of our courses has had at least one teacher from abroad! The exchange works also vice versa, as many Finnish JaSeSoi educators have got invitations to run workshops abroad.
In 1996 JaSeSoi ry organized the first Baltic and Scandinavian Meeting of Educators, and in 2000 the International Orff-Schulwerk Symposium “Expression in Music and Dance Education”.
JaSeSoi ry has been in contact with Orff Societies and institutions in other countries. In the year 2002 10 JaSeSoi ry activists attended the international summer course in Salzburg. JaSesoi ry has also activated its members to attend the Special Course in Salzburg. In the year 2002 a group of JaSeSoi ry members attended the AOSA Conference in Las Vegas, USA. In 2003 Mr. Jukka Siukonen was JaSeSoi ry representative in AOSA Conference in Louisville. It was a good place to introduce the brand new JaSeSoi ry’s banner. The former president of JaSeSoi ry, Mr. Harri Setälä also attended the conference as a representative of the Finnish Orff Education Center.
JaSeSoi ry’s international contacts take place at personal but also “official” level.
JaSeSoi ry has also limited amount of scholarships for international participants with financing difficulties. In 2003 one scholarship was given to Swedish Orff-Schulwerk Association FOSITS rf, and one to Estonian Association..
