XVIII Level Courses I-III
4.-9.6.2012 Oriveden Opisto
15.-16.3.2012 Diploma Seminar

Orff Level Courses I-III
was introduced to Finnish music education system in the year 1995. The system resembles the American one, but is totally applied to the Finnish society. The three-level course means one-week intensive summer course each year. In addition after finishing the three levels there is an extension called “Diploma Seminar”. Between the levels the participants have homework to do for the next level during the following summer. The evaluation of the Level Courses is not based on “numerus clausus”, only “Passed” or not. During the process the participants have created a portfolio about themselves as music educators. Their portfolios are archived in the Orff Handbook Library.
Although the Level Courses have been run since 1995 it was in 2003, when the first approved printed curriculum was published. This basic work was run by the team headed by Mr. Harri Setälä. His team consisted of Ms. Maaria Salmi-Setälä, Ms. Inkeri Simola-Isaksson, Mr.Esa Lamponen, Mr. Markku Kaikkonen as well as Ms. Soili Perkiö and Mr. Reinhold Wirsching as advisors . The project was funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Level Courses have brought leading instructors from abroad and Finland to enrich the contents of the Finnish Orff education. According to us it is essential to learn what is happening elsewhere, but also to learn to apply the ideas to one’s own work.

XIV International World Village 2012
Route to the Roots

23.-28.7.2012 in Valkeala, Finland

The idea of the World Village is to unite music educators of different countries and cultures. The course location is in the middle of the Finnish countryside. Music and human spirit are elements of this efficient week. To quote one of the participants: ”The friendship of all the participants, the support, encouragement, sharing and caring has been exhilarating. The identity of purpose, values and beliefs in the ethos of music education was a strong common bond. The unique personalities, all from different backgrounds, experiences, countries, political and religious values, age and areas of responsibility within music education, all bonded within the umbrella of one huge loving family. The organisation of the whole event was second to none. The common spirit of fun, laughter, mischief, understanding, hard work and ambition prevailed. The spirit of music lives on!”
